Mitchell Earl Gregory, 30, of 2921 New Walkertown Road in Winston-Salem, allegedly visited Midway Elementary, according to staff.

He was charged with three counts of being a sex offender unlawfully on premises. Gregory received a $60,000 secured bond and has court planned for July 9.

Deputies did not say when the alleged crimes occurred and did not release other details.

Gregory was charged with second degree sex offense May 20, 2002 in Davie County, according to online documents.

The 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa GSX 1300 R was stolen from Stoneburg Court on May 22. 

The motorcycle has a burgundy and black tribal paint job with gold pin stripes, a black windshield, and a black and gold alligator-skin seat. 

It had Georgia tags ‘YC7OXZ’ at the time it was stolen.

At the meeting, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, board members will discuss formally requesting Forsyth County Commissioners to hold a bond referendum this November, according to Theo Helm, spokesman with the school system. 

Helm said the referendum could range between $55 and $223 million. 

If the minimal amount of money is sought, the funds would be used primarily for school improvements and renovations.  If the maximum amount is sought, the extra funds would be used to pay for the construction of two new schools. 

During the meeting, Helm said board members will also discuss the North Carolina Virtual Academy and go into closed session to discuss a legal matter. 

The meeting is being held at the Administrative Center at 475 Corporate Square Drive. 

The long-awaited permits are being issued after the Coalition to March on Wall Street South collected petitions with more than 1,000 names demanding that the city approve the Sept. 2 protest. The petitions were handed to city leaders this week.

Coalition spokesman Ben Carroll said Wednesday that organizers have been pressuring the city since filing the permit paperwork eight months ago.

He called it a victory but says the coalition still wants Charlotte to take other measures, including repealing a new ordinance that tightens security during what the city calls extraordinary events.

The convention is being held in Charlotte from Sept. 4-6.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that a federal magistrate on Tuesday sentenced Allen Eugene Thompson of Vass to one year of probation and a loss of hunting privileges for five years.

Thompson pleaded guilty earlier this year to shooting 33-year-old Capt. Jeremiah Sipes on New Year’s Day last year on a
trail on the Fort Bragg border in Hoke County.

Thompson had been charged with criminally negligent hunting resulting in a death.

Heather Sipes says she’s forgiven Thompson and wishes he had received a lesser sentence. She says her husband had gone for a run on the trail when he was shot.

Ryan Christopher Cox, 21, of 165 Steamboat Drive, is accused of robbing the Eagle Express on U.S. 220 in Madison on Sunday, April 22. 

During the robbery, deputies said Cox threatened the store clerk with a gun. He is considered “armed and dangerous,” deputies said. 

No photo of Cox was available, but deputies described him as a white male standing 5’6″ tall and weighing 260 lbs.  He has brown hair, brown eyes, and may have facial hair, deputies said.

Patient navigators are dedicated to educating, scheduling and referring patients to proper specialists and serving as an advocate for their patients. Cancer is not only life-changing for the patient, but it also has a major effect on the patient’s family and friends. 

Family members of cancer patients are strongly encouraged to get involved in their treatment process and education. By doing this, family member can help the patient retain the large amounts of information given during doctor visits and treatment education. 

Also by attending the educational sessions and doctor appointments, family members can learn what to expect during the patient’s treatment process and how to support them through it. 

The cancer treatment process does not have to be an overwhelming obstacle for cancer patients in the community. Patient navigators are there to walk patients through treatment every step of the way. 

Patients are encouraged to look at treatment one day at a time—each day being a step toward survivorship.

Michael Brandon Gordon, who had originally pleaded not guilty in the death of Makayla Woodard, changed his plea to guilty during jury selection last Friday.

According to WBTV-TV, Gordon was sentenced to spend between 20 and 24 months in prison.

Woodard died after the two adult pit bulls attacked her while she was playing in the snow in the yard outside her home on Rehobeth Road on the morning of Jan. 12, 2011. Injuries were found over most of the girl’s body, including a fatal wound to her throat.

The girl’s great grandmother, Nancy Presson, rushed to fend off the pit bulls, but was also severely injured.

Law enforcement officers later shot and killed both dogs. 

Gordon, who lived next door, was away from his home at the time of the attack.  The pit bulls were not properly restrained pursuant to town ordinances, multiple media outlets reported.

WBTV reports Gordon had been warned before the attack that the dogs were dangerous.

“The loss of Makayla Woodard is an unspeakable tragedy, and it is my hope that this case can be a reminder to our community to act responsibly and not act in a manner which puts our neighbors in danger,” District Attorney Trey Robinson told the station.

FOX8′s Nicole Ferguson was live Wednesday morning from the Federal Courthouse in Greensboro with more details.

John Shelton, Director of Surry County Emergency Medical Services, said the infant was sitting in the tub with a 2-year-old at a home on Byerly Street when the drowning occurred.

The children were sitting in waist-deep water while their mother was watching them, but the mom stepped away momentarily to attend to other household chores, Shelton said. 

Shelton said when the mother turned away, the 2-year-old turned out the water faucet. When she returned to the bathroom about 10 minutes later, she found the infant face-down in the tub.

The mother and her boyfriend attempted to resuscitate the infant until EMS arrived, Shelton said. However, attempts to revive the girl were unsuccessful.

The girl pronounced dead after arriving at Northern Hospital shortly after 6:45 p.m. Her name is not being released.

No other information was provided.

The man was arrested at his house for felony vandalism.

Police said the suspects entered a residence in the 400 block of Hamilton Street around 9:15 p.m. and took an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police said the suspects shot at the three people at the home at the time, but they all managed to escape.

The victims received minor injuries and were examined by Alamance County EMS, police said.

Both suspects are described as black males wearing black hooded sweatshirt with silver handguns.

The first is described as being about 5’8” with a heavy build and white T-shirt. The second is described as being about 6’ with a thin build.

The attack was halted only when police shot and killed the attacker, identified as 31-year old Rudy Eugene.

These aren’t the same bath salts to make your tub water smell nice. “Bath salts” is just a fake name, but users know it’s not really for the bath.

Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse described bath salts as an “emerging and dangerous product” in February 2011.

She urged parents, teachers and the public to be aware of the potential dangers of these drugs. Officials said they had already been linked to numerous visits to the E.R. and calls to poison control centers in the U.S.

In October 2011, these “bath salts” and its related products were put on schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act, which means that the drug has no legitimate use or safety in the U.S. and is highly addictive.

Bath salts contain amphetamine-like chemicals such as methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), mephedrone, and pyrovalerone. They’re referred to as a “designer drug of the phenethylamine class” by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Other drugs in this class include amphetamines, mescaline, and ephedrine. MDPV comes in a powdered form that is inhaled, swallowed or shot into a vein. Bath Salts are sold as “cocaine substitutes” or “synthetic LSD.”

When MDPV gets to the brain, the effects include producing feelings of empathy, stimulation, alertness, euphoria, sensory awareness and hallucinations. Other reported effects include rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and sweating.

According to the DEA, MDPV has been reported to cause intense panic attacks, psychosis, and a strong desire to use the drug again.

“Addictive substances, whether they are bath salts, alcohol or other drugs, can have horrific and costly consequences. Sometimes these consequences can result from only one use; other times they are a result of the complex brain disease of addiction,” said Susan E. Foster, vice president and director of policy research and analysis at The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

“Together, risky use of addictive substances and addiction constitute our nation’s largest and most costly health problem. In the interest of health and public safety, Americans must begin to understand that substance use is a preventable public health problem and addiction is a treatable disease,” she added.

Reports began surfacing in 2009 about teens and young adults abusing synthetic stimulant products sold as Bath Salts, “plant fertilizer,” energy-1, Ivory Wave, Red Dove, Purple Wave, Blue Silk, Zoom, Bloom, Cloud Nine, Ocean Snow, Lunar Wave, Vanilla Sky, White Lightning, Scarface, and Hurricane Charlie.

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s forensic monitoring system found two reports of MDPV in 2009. In 2010 that figure jumped to 338 cases. Between January through September 2011, the numbers skyrocketed to 911 MDPV cases, spanning 34 states.

KINGSTON, Mass. — Back in February, 9-year-old Brendan Haas wanted to trade for a trip to Disney World to give to a deserving family.

He started with a toy soldier. From there, the trades got bigger and bigger with the network growing nationwide.

Then Brendan met his goal: Tickets to Disney World including airfare, a stay at the Disney villas, and almost $900 in Disney gift certificates.

On Memorial Day weekend, the family of a fallen soldier was chosen out of a hat to receive Brendan’s gift. Twenty-five-year-old Timothy Steele was killed last August in Afghanistan. The soldier left behind a wife and a 2-year-old daughter named Liberty Hope.

Now, the two families are connected by a single toy soldier.

Cody Lee Miller, 19, of Thomasville, was charged with animal cruelty, larceny and trespassing. Deputies said the crimes were reported May 23 in the 2200 block of Lower Lake Road.

He received an $8,000 secured bond and has court set for June 15. Deputies did not release any other information.

Authorities are investigating the suicide of condemned inmate James Lee Crummel and declined to provide the circumstances of the hanging, which happened Sunday afternoon in the rear of his single-occupant cell, said Lt. Sam Robinson of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

A corrections officer had last observed Crummel 15 minutes before he was found dead, Robinson said. The officer was doing an inmate count before dinner when he found Crummel’s body, Robinson said.

Crummel had not been under suicide watch, Robinson said.

An autopsy will be conducted, he said.

Crummel went to death row shortly after being sentenced to death on July 9, 2004, by a Riverside County jury for the April 13, 1979, kidnapping, sexual abuse and murder of 13-year-old James Wilfred Trotter, who disappeared on his way to school, authorities said.

The boy’s remains were found in 1990, and the identity of the body was not confirmed until 1996, authorities said.

California reinstated capital punishment in 1978, and since then, 57 condemned inmates have died from natural causes, 20 have committed suicide, 13 have been executed in California, one was executed in Missouri and six died from other causes, authorities said. California has 723 convicts on California’s death row.
