North Carolina cheerleading coach pleads guilty to sex charges
MANTEO, N.C. – A former North Carolina gymnastics and cheerleading coach has pleaded guilty to taking indecent liberties with a minor.
The Virginian-Pilot reported that Russell “Rusty” Scherer, 39, was sentenced to an active maximum sentence of 32 months for one count of indecent liberties.
Scherer pleaded guilty Wednesday to four counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor, according to the paper.
He was given a suspended sentence for each of the other counts and must also register as a sex offender.
Scherer owned or was associated with several cheerleading businesses in Fletcher, Currituck County, Manteo and Nags Head. He was arrested last year.
