COLUMBIA, S.C. — Police believe an escaped inmate is also the same man responsible for stabbing an officer several times inside a Columbia Walmart Wednesday, according to WSOC.

A massive manhunt is underway for Michael Williamson, who they say escaped from the McCormick Correction Institute and traveled 90 minutes to Columbia, where he’s accused of stabbing a female officer multiple times inside the Walmart.

Investigators in Columbia believe he escaped the prison around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday before heading to Columbia.

Police said the officer was responding to a shoplifting call at the Walmart on Bush River Road around 10 p.m. and chased after Williamson. That’s when officials said he turned and stabbed the officer several times.

That officer was rushed to the hospital where she was in stable condition. Her name has not been released.
