KING, N.C. – A 19-year-old man is accused of shooting and killing a 17-year-old male in King, according to King police.

Roger Dale Phillips III, of King, is accused of shooting and killing Chanler Aaron Gilham at an apartment complex on Saturday.

The shooting happened at about 4:15 p.m. at 113 Pineview Drive. It was inside the apartment and there was one other witness present, according to a police press release.

The victim died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to police.

Police said the suspect and victim knew each other and there had been an ongoing dispute between them.

“There is evidence of illegal drug activity in the case, but at present we are withholding any further information concerning a possible motive in the shooting,” said King Police Chief Paula May in a prepared statement.

“Chanler Gilham was well liked by his peers, and was a student at West Stokes High School in the process of transferring to Meadowbrook Academy in King,” May said.

Phillips is held without bond in Stokes County pending a first court appearance on Monday.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be made by the family through Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Rural Hall, N.C.
