Man arrested in Burlington homeless shelter storage unit break-in

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Police arrested a man Thursday night in connection with allegedly breaking into a storage unit at a homeless shelter.

Around 9 p.m., Burlington police swarmed the back of Allied Churches of Alamance County, where the shelter keeps several outdoor storage units and arrested Darryl Atwater.

The break-in happened days after three of the shelter's five storage units were broken into, according to police.

On Monday, shelter employees found the doors to the storage units kicked in. More than $500 worth of donated jackets, toiletries and baby items were stolen, according to Greg Seel, agency manager for ACAC.

Atwater is charged with two counts of breaking and entering and one count of possession of stolen goods.

He is currently in the Alamance County Jail under a $40,000 secured bond.
