Mebane woman charged with homicide

MEBANE, N.C. — A Mebane woman has been charged with second-degree homicide, according to a news release from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

Early Friday morning, officers responded to U.S. 70 between Mebane and Haw River to a report of an unresponsive man in the road.

Deputies found Michael Darrell Lea unconscious lying on U.S. 70. Ashley Deneen Watlington was also at the scene.

Watlington and Lea had children in common and shared a residence on Edgewood Church Road in Mebane.

An investigation led to the arrest of Watlington who was initially charged with assault inflicting serious injury.

Lea was taken to UNC Chapel Hill where he was in intensive care. Lea died Sunday morning and Watlington’s charges have been upgraded to second-degree homicide. She is being held under a $250,000 secured bond.
