ASHEBORO, N.C. — A tip led to a Seagrove man being charged with several counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Zachary Tyler Akhtar, 21, is charged with 41 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of minor, according to a news release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in reference to child pornography uploaded to a social media site, the release said.

The investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant and seizure of a large amount of digital media at an apartment in the 100 block of Dublin Square Road in Asheboro where Akhtar was staying, the release said.

Upon reviewing the digital media, investigators located a large amount of child pornography on some of the devices and charges were filed against Akhtar, the release said.

Akhtar failed to meet with investigators as scheduled and the sheriff’s office said they learned he fled to Florida.

The United Sates Marshall Service assisted investigators with trying to locate Akhtar.

Akhtar eventually contacted family who picked him up in Florida, the release said. Akhtar then made contact with investigators and made arrangements to turn himself in.

Investigators are still reviewing the digital media seized and said more charges are possible.

Akhtar was placed in the Randolph County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 6.
