LAKE LURE, N.C. – A woman who was evacuated from her home during the wildfires in western North Carolina arrived home to a pleasant surprise.

Shannon Wilson told WLOS that she had been evacuated for seven days as firefighters battled flames from spreading in Lake Lure.

When she arrived home on Saturday, she found that firefighters removed her flag from her flagpole and safely placed it behind her glass door so it wouldn’t get burned.

“It made me have goosebumps the minute I realized what they did,” she said.

Firefighters are still battling the 72-hundred-acre Party Rock fire and it was about 36 percent contained as of Friday night.

More than 900 firefighters are working to keep the fire from spreading. Conditions on the ground were dry — as it hasn’t rained in 46 days.

Officials are allowing residents and business owners who evacuated Chimney Rock village to return this weekend but only with a permit.
