Things to do when someone you know suffers a severe fall

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Doctor Elliot Wentz says even more people come to the emergency department at Wesley Long Hospital because of falls around the holidays.

"Even early in the fall when there's just frost on the ground, I've seen a number of people fall going out to get the newspaper in the morning," Dr. Wentz said.

For elderly people, a cause for a fall this time of year is escalators in malls or airports.

"Maybe using a cane or a walker it can be very difficult to navigate getting on or off an escalator," he said.

For kids, all of the new holiday toys can cause them to take a tumble.

"Toys are very commonly a cause of falls, and of course commonly, bicycles skateboards, roller skates, roller blades and any other device kids use."

No matter what the age of the person, try to get them to talk to you.

If you get no reply, immediately call 911.
