GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. – A Greensboro firefighter proposed to a teacher during a school fire drill Thursday afternoon.
Jessica Smith, a Northwest Guildford High School math teacher, said “yes.” Her fiancé Eric Estep took his time planning out the special moment.
School administrators and some of Smith’s students knew about the surprise.
“The fire department and the fire service means the world to me and when she started teaching at Northwest she fell in love with the students and the staff,” Estep said. “I wanted to do something that was special for the both of us."
Estep’s proposal brought the teacher to tears.
"I am on cloud nine,” Smith said. “I don't know how else to explain it. I'm just really happy, that was better than anything I ever could have dreamed."
The couple has been together for two and a half years. They met after Estep spotted his bride-to-be on Facebook.
“If you could fall in love with a picture, I did,” Estep said.
“He has everything you could ever want in a significant other, in a best friend and a partner,” Smith said.
Although Smith says she didn't expect a proposal like this, she had a hunch something big was coming. The bride-to-be noticed a change in her fiancé's demeanor.
