Amtrak train hits, kills 2 people in Lexington

LEXINGTON, N.C. -- Police are investigating after an Amtrak train hit and killed two people in Lexington early Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 1:05 a.m. at the intersection of South Railroad Street and East 5th Avenue, near the train depot.

Police say the victims were identified as 48-year-old Carmen Ruiz and 48-year-old Rafael Patricio.

The Amtrak was traveling southbound from Charlottesville, Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina with 130 passengers when the crash occurred. There were no injuries to crew or passengers.

As of 9:22 a.m. Monday, the reason for the collision is unknown and crews are currently at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
