2-year-old child seriously injured by dog in Wilkes County

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. – A 2-year-old child was seriously injured after being attacked by a dog in Wilkes County, according to Wilkes County EMS Director Eric Morrison.

Wilkes County emergency workers were called at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in reference to the incident, Morrison said in a press release.

The child was brought to the Champion Fire Department by family members, according to Morrison. The child remains in critical condition.

Wilkes EMS took the child to Wilkes Regional Medical Center for additional treatment and the child was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The dog was euthanized by a family member and is in the custody of Wilkes County Animal Control, according to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.

Disease testing will be conducted on the animal. The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office along with Wilkes County Animal Control are investigating this incident, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim, his family, and all of the emergency personnel who have assisted and continue to care for the victim,” the press release stated.
