ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A man is in custody after allegedly abducting and raping a woman in Alamance County.

Mark Anthony Chamberlain, 55, of Burlington, is charged with first-degree rape, according to a news release from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office. Additional charges are pending, the release said.

At about 2:30 a.m. Monday, Alamance County deputies were dispatched to the area of N.C. 87 near the Caswell County line regarding a sexual assault.

The victim, a female in her 20s, told deputies she had been abducted at knifepoint on Webb Avenue in Burlington near the intersection with Church Street.

The victim said she was taken to an area on Hanover Road in Graham where she was sexually assaulted. She told deputies the suspect then drove her to the area of N.C. 87 near the Caswell County line and released her. She went to a nearby residence to use a phone and report the incident, the release said.

“There’s quite a bit of distance from the location of where the rape was reported to have occurred to where she was released on N.C. 87 North, that’s a 25-30 minute drive,” said Randy Jones with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was able to provide deputies with a suspect description and a vehicle description.

As sheriff’s deputies were responding, a deputy met a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description. A traffic stop was made on N.C. 87 near Robinhood Drive and Chamberlain was taken into custody.

Jones says good observational police work allowed Chamberlain to be arrested so quickly.

Chamberlain’s bond has not been determined at this time, the release said.

The victim was transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Chamberlain is a registered sex offender in the state of North Carolina.

“This individual I understand was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet at the time he was arrested,” Jones said.

Jones says investigators with the sheriff’s office don’t believe this case is related to the alleged abduction and rape of an 11-year-old girl in Mebane last week.
