Church family tries to heal after tragic shooting of security guard

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro police are still trying to figure out who is responsible for shooting an armed security guard at the food lion on East Market Street Saturday night.

Surveillance pictures released yesterday show the moments before and after a man dressed in all black, walked through the entrance of the store and shot and killed Anthony Charles Smith, who was 51.

It’s hard for Smith’s pastor to wrap is head around the shooting.

"I think everyone has questions that sometimes can't be answered,” Pastor Jay Boyce said. "It’s OK to question the ways of God, but we be careful not to question his wisdom. I don't quite have all the answers. But I do know he loves us and cares for us and we just live in a broken world.”

Smith and his family are members at Oaklawn Baptist Church in Winston-Salem where Boyce preaches.

Boyce has known Smith and his family for the past six years.

"I think the best things that I can say about him is that he loved his family dearly. Loved his wife, loved his children... and he was always willing to help,” he said.

"But I can't imagine, thinking about my kids, the devastation they are now facing and the uphill climb,” he added.

The funeral is planned for Friday at 1 p.m. at Oaklawn Baptist Church.
