Body of Erica Parsons discovered five years after she disappeared

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — The body of a Rowan County girl who was last seen in November 2011 has been located, according to Capt. John Sifford with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

In August 2016, investigators with the sheriff’s office and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) obtained information that confirmed Erica Parsons was likely deceased.

On Tuesday, Rowan County detectives and special agents with the FBI recovered skeletal human remains of a young girl who was identified as Erica, Sifford said.

Erica’s body was found on a property off Moore Road in Chesterfield County, S.C., according to WSOC. Erica’s adoptive father, Sandy Parsons, led investigators straight to her body, WSOC reports.

The property is believed to be owned by a family member of Sandy Parsons, WSOC reports.

Erica was last seen in November 2011 but her family didn’t report her missing until July 2013. At the time she was just 13 years old. The Parsons had claimed the girl went to live in Asheville with a woman they believed to be her biological grandmother, but that woman has never materialized.

Through the course of the investigation, the adopted parents of Erica, Sandy and Casey Parsons, were charged with federal fraud charges related to Erica’s disappearance and were later sentenced to active sentences in federal prison.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is expected to hold a news conference next week with an update on the case.
