Witness photograph appears to show gun at Keith Lamont Scott’s feet
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A photo taken by an eye witness moments after the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott appears to show a gun at his feet.
Whether or not Scott had a gun at the time of the incident has been argued between the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Scott’s family since Tuesday and this photo could be proof to justify the police’s claim, according to WCNC.
Scott’s family claims he was reading a book in his vehicle when officers approached and shot him while CMPD Chief Kerr Putney says he was armed and no book was found at the scene.
On Wednesday, Keith Scott’s wife released a statement saying her family is devastated and called for protesters to remain calm.
My family is devastated by the shooting death of my husband, Keith.
Keith was a loving husband, father, brother and friend who will be deeply missed every day.
As a family, we respect the rights of those who wish to protest, but we ask that people protest peacefully. Please do not hurt people or members of law enforcement, damage property or take things that do not belong to you in the name of protesting.
After listening to remarks made by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Putney today, we have more questions than answers about Keith’s death. Rest assured, we will work diligently to get answers to our questions as quickly as possible.
In the near future, we will offer more information about Keith and our family.
But the plea fell on deaf ears Wednesday night as protesters clashed with police and violence erupted throughout the City of Charlotte.
Gov. Pat McCrory declared a State of Emergency upon request of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney. The governor also initiated efforts to deploy members of the National Guard and State Highway Patrol to Charlotte.
In a tweet early Thursday morning, CMPD said at least 4 officers were injured during the overnight demonstration.
Charlotte’s mayor will view the dashcam video late today.
