ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Republican Buck Newton and Democrat Josh Stein faced off on the debate stage in Asheboro Tuesday night. Both candidates answered questions about the state crime lab, working with local law enforcement and district attorneys, and the death penalty.
Newton constantly compared Stein to current Attorney General Roy Cooper and Stein responded by assuring the audience he was not Cooper, but instead his own candidate.
The candidates also discussed police training, funding and use of force.
"We have to support them, we have to give them the training and equipment and tools to make sure that every time that it's done right. Unfortunately, sometimes, occasionally, mistakes are made, but the vast majority of the time our law enforcement does it right every time," said Newton.
"We as a society really need to understand the unique circumstances in which they do they do their work and give them the tools they need to succeed.... There are bad police officers and when they do wrong they need to be held accountable, it goes without saying," Stein said.
