DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. – A fatal collision involving a tractor-trailer and a car closed Interstate 85 northbound near Lexington early Saturday morning.

The tractor-trailer and car collided around 12:30 a.m. near mile marker 92, according to authorities.

An Infinity — driven by 20-year-old Shawn McRae Jr. of Charlotte — hit the tractor-trailer. The trailer, which was in the right lane, went off the road, into an embankment and then overturned. The driver — 58-year-old Richard William Ferguson of York, S.C. — died at the scene.

Ferguson drove for Averitt Express.
McRae is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving with a revoked license, careless and wreckless driving, and driving under 21 while impaired.  More charges are possible.
