WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The trainers at The Winston-Salem Dog Training Club love teaching dogs and their owners how to earn the prestigious therapy dog certification. It’s a long process – well beyond typical obedience training – but for patients, these dogs provide a service that humans simply cannot.
Sherrie Johns, one of the top instructors, says her dog’s intuition never ceases to amaze her.
“I’ve seen her go to people who I didn’t know they had cancer… she knew. And she would go right to them.”
There is no specific breed of dog that is better than another at this job. Personalities differ from dog-to-dog regardless of age, background, and genetics. What they all have in common is the ability to listen and trust their handlers unconditionally.
Among a long list of clients, WSDTC serves Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Brenner Children’s Hospital, Hospice, SciWorks and local schools.
