REIDSVILLE, N.C. -- Reidsville police are investigating a fight and shooting on Thursday evening.
Officers responded to the 500 Block of McCoy Street at 5:54 p.m. in reference to a report of a fight and shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered 10 people standing in the yard with two gunshot victims. The victims were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Prior to the shooting, police say there was a gathering at the home and the victims were attempting to flee after shots went off.
Police arrested and charged a Jalian Tyrell Scales, 17, from Martinsville, Virginia, with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Reidsville police tell FOX8 the two victims were a 16-year-old and 18-year-old girl.
“When I left to go to the store to get the food, the commotion broke off then. When I came back it was more of a commotion and then the next thing I know we had the [crime scene] tape,” said Genessa Himphill, who lives a few houses down.
“Here's another example of an incident that occurs with firearms being involved. Some individuals not being the intended target,” said Lt. Shannon Coates, of Reidsville police.
However for Himphill, Thursday’s shooting was just another chapter in an area, she says is plagued by a gang, called "Y-Not."
“It just seems like we don't have any help. I don't know what to call it? Childish, violent. Because you have adults sitting there calling out my kids, in front of my house,” she said. “I'm a mother and no matter what I got to defend my kids.”
Scales is being held at the Rockingham County Jail on a $5 million secured bond and the investigation is ongoing.
Police are looking for another suspect they believe is also from the Martinsville area.
After the incident, extra law enforcement was at Reidsville High School on Thursday.
