HIGH POINT, N.C. – Two dogs died in an apartment fire in High Point on Friday, according to High Point Fire Marshall Chris Weir.

Multiple units responded to the fire at Swathmore Court Apartments on Swathmore Avenue at about 2:47 p.m. Firefighters had the situation under control by about 3.

There was one person in the apartment who had smoke inhalation, but was not taken to the hospital, according to the fire department. Two dogs died of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities said it originated in the kitchen.

The occupant will be displaced and plans to stay with family, according to Weir.

The fire did not have an impact on other apartments in the building.

“The fire department would like to pass on our sympathy for the loss of the pets,” Weir said, who also recommended that people check their smoke alarms monthly.
