LOWELL, N.C. — A North Carolina police officer is accused of impregnating a 14-year-old girl that he mentored.

WSOC reports the unnamed officer volunteered to mentor the girl after she tried to run away. The mother, who was at first reluctant to comply with his request, did so because he was a police officer.

The mother said she initially found signs of the inappropriate relationship through several texts messages on her daughter’s phone.

“If you keep that baby I’m done and you know it,” one text message said.

She went to the Gaston County Police Department and they contacted the district attorney. The State Bureau of Investigation has since opened a full-scale investigation.

In addition, the officer confessed the relations to the mother, telling her that he took her virginity and confirming that the baby is his.

He said the acts occurred at his home and in his patrol car.

He is at least temporarily unemployed and the investigation is ongoing.
