GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A new billboard in Greensboro has some folks up in arms.
The billboard, at Interstate 40 East/Interstate 85, features a picture of a backpack, the words "Pack Lite" and a photo of a can of Miller Lite beer.
"Two days ago I was sitting at my desk and I received a phone call from a concerned parent who said, 'Have you seen the billboard?'” said Merle Green, Guilford County’s director of Public Health.
Shortly after the phone call, Green went to take a look at it for herself.
"So it says to me that it's OK for young people that carry backpacks to also be engaged in the consumption of beer,” she explained.
The ad has a majority of parents that FOX8 spoke to against it too, but there are some who don’t seem to have a problem with it.
"I don't think anything of it. It is just an advertisement. But I don't think it should be taken down," said Edward Levy, a parent of two.
"It’s a little off-putting. I mean with the book bag and the beer I typically think of a high school teenager thinking, 'Oh, you know, I see this, it makes me feel like I’m OK to do this and be in school,'” said Courtney Harrington.
Kristin Carter is also a parent of two and shares the same feelings with Harrington.
"Anyone under 21 I don't think that they should be seeing a sign like that, especially with the backpack,” she said.
Lamar Advertising, the company that put up the sign, says it is trying to find the best solution between the client, Miller Lite, and those who are concerned.
"So we feel very confident that very soon that an adjustment might be made,” Green said.
We did attempt to reach out to Miller Lite representatives regarding the ad, but so far we have not heard back.
