GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Greensboro Police Department is investigating an early morning shooting that sent one person to the hospital.

Police say the investigation is in the early stages but officers believe the shooting may have taken place in the area of Gillespie Street. A press release states officers were initially responding to an assault call.

Investigators are focusing on a white vehicle that appears to be involved. The car is located in a grassy area at the corner of Peachtree Street and York Street.

Several law enforcement officers are on the scene.

Neighbors woke up, surprised to see yellow crime scene tape.

"All I seen was blue lights. I'm like, oh my God, what happened?" said Tammie McCauley, who lives nearby. "Sad, I just thought sad. Just bless the family."
