LITTLE ELM, Texas — In one of the sweetest stories of the day, a server at an Applebee’s in Texas got a $500 tip on a $0.37 bill because of an act of kindness.

Kasey Simmons, 32, said he received the large tip and a letter written on a napkin during his shift on Tuesday.

WFAA reports that Simmons went to a Kroger grocery store on Monday and noticed a woman who looked unhappy.

Simmons, who enjoys helping others, approached the woman and offered to pay for her groceries.

“I insisted,” Simmons said, according to WFAA. “It was only $17, but it’s not about the money — it’s about showing someone you care.”

After reading the letter, he learned that the tip and napkin were from the daughter of the woman at Kroger, who explained that her mother was mourning the three-year anniversary of her husband’s death.

Simmons said he’d like to meet the family to thank them.
