STATESVILLE, N.C. — A custom doughnut shop called “D’s ‘Nuts” is opening in Statesville, according to the Statesville Record & Landmark.

The business will open sometime in mid-August at 209 W. Front St. in the city’s downtown area, according to the paper.

“With all the hype with the college kids and the internet saying, people are already asking for T-shirts,” said Matthew Key who is opening the business with his wife Danielle.

The paper reported that customers will be able to choose from six glazes and about 16 toppings to apply to cake donuts, which will be customized in front of them.

The name is based on Danielle’s name and a shortened version of “doughnuts.” The title of the business was also an apparent internet sensation as “Deez Nuts” filed paperwork to run for president last year.

Nuts, who ran as an independent, fared well in the key state of North Carolina, where the mysterious figure got the support of 9 percent of likely voters.
