SHACKLEFORD BANKS, N.C. — Police have identified the man who died trying to save his three daughters from a rip current Monday afternoon as 35-year-old Rick Brown, WNCN reports.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. when Brown’s daughters were caught in a riptide near the west end of Shackleford Banks. He immediately jumped into the water to save his three girls.

The children were rescued by bystanders and a man in a boat, but the father wasn’t able to make it back, police say.

Rescue crews attempted CPR on him, but upon arrival at a local hospital, was pronounced dead.
