GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville police said the owner of a Colombian red-tailed boa will not face charges after the reptile bit a child who was petting it Sunday evening.

According to WHNS, Police said an officer on patrol near South Main Street was advised that a child had been bitten by a 5-foot-snake just before 5:30 p.m.

The officer said a man was downtown with the snake and allowing passersby to pet it.

The father of the 8-year-old boy allowed him to pet the snake and police said the snake bit the boy on the arm.

The child was treated by EMS on scene for the bite.

Animal Control was contacted and police said they determined that the snake was nonvenomous and found no reason to seize the snake.

The father and boy were visiting the area from North Carolina.
