ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Investigators in St. Peters believe the house fire that claimed the lives of a mother and her two children was set intentionally by the mom after she drowned her two kids.

St. Peters Police said when they entered the home Thursday evening they found the body of Jenny Ayers, 37, near the back door of the home where the fire started. Officers also said a gas can was found near her body.

Authorities then located the bodies of 5-year-old Jada Hines and her 10-year-old brother Jordie submerged in the bathroom tub. The preliminary autopsy report reveals that both children were drowned prior to the start of the fire. The autopsy also says Ayres died from injuries caused by the fire.

Police said they found all doors to the home in the 1800 block of Elm Tree Street secured and dead bolted. They no longer believe foul play happened outside the home. Instead the Major Case Squad and St. Peters Police believe Ayers set the fire intentionally. St. Peters Police have now taken over the investigation.

No further information was released by authorities as they continue to search for the motive.
