DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A motorcyclist died in an accident just north of the I-85 rest area in Davidson County, according to Davidson County 911.

The accident happened in the southbound lanes of the freeway at about 6:15 p.m. Friday.

According to Trooper J.L. Elledge with the Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist was identified as 41-year-old Thomas Eugene Strange, of Lexington.

Troopers believe Strange was traveling in excess of 100 mph.

He was passing another vehicle in the right lane when he lost control, crashed into a bridge support and was killed instantly, Elledge said.

Traffic had been backed up for miles with emergency equipment from Highway Patrol, multiple fire departments and Davidson County EMS blocking two of the three lanes. Those lanes were reopened at 8:15 p.m.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
