ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page is warning citizens to be alert after receiving a report that a scammer is calling and claiming to be with the sheriff’s office.

According to a news release, the scammer, disguising themselves as “Officer Shawn Woods,” is threatening arrest if the amount owed back in taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is not paid.

The scammer told the citizen to call a 516 area code to make the payment. The caller’s identification was faked to read 336-634-3232, which is the number to the sheriff’s office.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office asks that anyone who receives a similar call to contact its office at (336) 634-3232.
