ELON, N.C. – Elon University’s commencement speaker blasted North Carolina Republicans in his speech and called for the repeal of House Bill 2.

The Elon University Pendulum reported that CNN analyst David Gergen spent his commencement speech Saturday urging students to get involved in the fight for equality.

“We are not only damaging our reputation, but putting our fellow citizens at risk,” said Gergen. “We need to take North Carolina back.”

Gergen is a political commentator and former presidential advisor who served during the administrations of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

House Bill 2, among other things, requires people to use restrooms that correspond to their gender at birth.

Gov. Pat McCrory signed the highly-controversial law, called the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, in March after it was passed by the North Carolina Senate.

Supporters of the bill call it “common sense” while opponents claim it discriminates against transgender individuals.
