MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — Morehead City police sent out a safety alert after a man tried to lure children into his car with candy.

The incident happened on Saturday, Morehead City police said on Facebook. The vehicle was described as a black four-door Buick or Ford with a loud muffler and a red stripe on the bottom.

Morehead City police said the driver, described as a man in his 40s or 50s with a beard, long brownish-gray hair and wearing a bandana, attempted to lure children into his vehicle by offering them candy.

The children ran to their guardians and when the guardians came out, the subject left the area at a high rate of speed, police said.

Morehead City police advised parents in the safety alert to remind children of the dangers of talking to strangers and to get an adult if someone tries to offer them candy or a pet from a vehicle.
