North Carolina firefighter killed while battling blaze at shopping center

PINEVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina firefighter died while battling a large fire at a shopping center on Saturday night.

WSOC reported that the Pineville firefighter was removed from a fire at Countryside Shopping Center that was reported at about 9 p.m.

The identity of the firefighter has not been released. Another firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Charlotte Fire Chief Jon Hannan said a mayday call sounded while firefighters were fighting the blaze.

Charlotte Fire and Mecklenburg County Fire crews assisted with the Pineville blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal is leading the investigation, according to WSOC.
