1 taken to hospital, another rescued in Rockingham Co. apartment fire

MADISON, N.C. – One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and another was rescued during an apartment fire in Rockingham County.

Authorities said the 2-alarm fire was reported at about 9 a.m. Sunday at an apartment complex at 230 N. Franklin St. in Madison.

An apartment on the top floor of the building was damaged by the fire, but authorities have not said what the extent of the damage is.

Crews used a ladder to rescue a person in an adjacent apartment, according to officials. The person who was being treated for smoke inhalation was taken to Moses Cone Hospital. Twelve residents were evacuated.

The cause of the fire and the names of the people involved have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
