ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The stepfather of a 2-year-old who was reported missing from a playground in San Diego, Calif., 14 years ago was arrested in North Carolina Monday.

Tieray D. Jones, 37, was arrested on suspicion of killing Jahi Turner, San Diego County District Attorney, Bonnie Dumanis, told FOX5. He is charged with murder and felony child abuse causing death.

At this point, officials have not released information about the new evidence that led to Jones' arrest.

"Our goal is to and has always been to recover Jahi," a detective told FOX5, when asked if they had found the boy.

Jones reported Jahi's disappearance from a park on Beech Street on April 25, 2002. Jones told authorities he went to get a soda and Jahi had vanished by the time he returned. Police say they did not find Jahi's fingerprints on the playground equipment.

Several witnesses reported seeing Jones dragging a large bag to the trash the day before Jahi was reported missing.

Despite weeks of searching, Jahi's body was never recovered. According to FOX5, Marines and police even spent weeks sifting through garbage, looking for any trace of the 2-year-old.

Jahi's mother, Tameka Jones, was deployed at sea and Jones, the boy's stepfather, was looking after him when he disappeared.

Jones will be arraigned in North Carolina on Tuesday and Dumanis said he will seek Jones' extradition to San Diego.
