GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro police have identified the victim in Thursday morning's Beck Street homicide.

James Andrew McMillan, 31, was killed while sitting in the living room of an apartment in the 3300 block of Beck Street. His next of kin has been notified.

According to Capt. Mike Richey, the shooting happened at 12:56 a.m. and McMillan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found multiple shell casings on the ground outside the apartment where the shooting happened. Richey said they believe multiple weapons were used.

Richey said investigators now believe the victim was targeted.

McMillan was in the living room of the apartment when a shot was fired through the window, according to Richey. Three other people were in the apartment when the shots were fired -- an adult female, an adult male and a 12-year-old child.

Police had already stepped up patrols in this area after other recent violent crimes. Now, they plan to increase their presence here even more.

Richey said police are searching for more than one suspect.

A homicide happened on this same block in December of 2015.

Crime data shows the following incidents since the middle of October on Beck Street:

  • 1 larceny
  • 1 motor vehicle theft
  • 6 assaults
  • 2 acts of vandalism
  • 2 homicides
