WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A Greensboro woman has died and a man injured after they were hit by a train in Forsyth County on Saturday.

Karen Harlow, 51, died at the scene due to injuries and 37-year-old Aleyn William Griswold of Greensboro was injured and taken to the hospital, according to Winston-Salem police.

Winston-Salem police, firefighters and Forsyth County emergency workers responded to the incident on Lowery Street over the trestle at Salem Lake shortly after 3 p.m.

Authorities said four adults and one child were standing on a railroad bridge when a Norfolk Southern train began to cross the bridge.

Everyone except for the two victims were able to get off the bridge. Officials said it can take a loaded train up to a mile to stop.

Griswold was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Details on his condition were not immediately available.
