FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Several victims of a Fayetteville Craigslist scam say they received a box of rocks instead of the items they purchased.

Fayetteville police told WRAL that the scam is centered around a Craigslist advertisement that offers electronics for a “good price.”

The victims are told to meet the seller in the parking lot of a local retail store so they can exchange money and the items. Then the victims are given what looks like a factory sealed box.

When the victims get home and open the box, authorities say they either find rocks or other materials that make the package appear to match the appropriate weight of the item the purchased.

One of the suspects has used the name Ree Johnson on more than one occasion, authorities told WRAL.

Anyone with information or who may have been a victim of the scam is asked to call Fayetteville police at (910) 433-1856.
