LUMBERTON, N.C. — A child was killed in a dog attack in Robeson County Sunday, according to WRAL.

According to family members, 7-year-old Talen West and his brother, 8-year-old Jaylen West, were playing in the woods near a home on Odum Road in Lumberton when a neighbor’s pit bull attacked them.

Emergency crews responded to the area around 11: 30 a.m. and found Talen unresponsive, according to WRAL.

Talen was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities said the 7-year-old had severe puncture wounds on his body.

His brother Jaylen was treated for leg injuries and released.

Family members told WRAL that the dog had never shown signs of any violent tendencies.

The boys’ cousin, David West, said that Jaylen had tried to pull the dog off of his brother, but was unable to.

“His little brother had a machete or hatchet or something and got the dog off of him, but it was too late,” David West told WRAL. β€œHe got him by his neck and broke his neck.”

Deputies are still working to determine what could have provoked the dog.

So far, no charges have been filed.
