Former Rowan County Detention Center officer charged with providing drugs to prisoners

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A former Rowan County Detention Center officer has been charged with giving drugs and tobacco products to inmates.

Dwayne Lamont Smith, 26, of Concord, was suspended on Dec. 17 after he became the focus of an internal investigation. He was fired from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.

Smith is accused of providing marijuana, non-controlled prescription medications and tobacco products to prisoners. Officials said he may have allowed inmates to use his personal cell phone inside the facility as well.

According to a release, Smith is being held in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond.
