PRYOR, Okla. — A 14-year-old boy playing a “ding dong ditch” prank was shot in the back by a homeowner in Oklahoma.

KOTV reported that Cole Peyton was with two other friends when he was ringing doorbells in his Pryor, Oklahoma, neighborhood and running off.

The teenagers were reportedly ringing doorbells and running off at about 1:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

“We saw three kids walking down by the newer houses. It was kind of odd, but didn’t think anything of it,” neighbor Samantha Perry told KOTV.

But one neighbor reportedly thought the teenagers were trying to break into his home and started firing several shots from outside his residence.

The homeowner who fired the shots has not been arrested. Pryor Police Chief Steven Lemmings said the investigation now centers on whether the homeowner’s use of deadly force was lawful or illegal.

Peyton is now out of surgery after being shot several times. He has been described as an honor roll student who plays football and wrestles for his high school.
