80-year-old woman assaulted, robbed in Family Dollar parking lot; 2 suspects arrested

WENTWORTH, N.C. -- Two people are in custody after they allegedly assaulted and robbed an 80-year-old woman in Wentworth, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the Family Dollar on N.C. 87 in Wentworth at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Upon arrival, an 80-year-old female victim told deputies after getting out of her vehicle and locking it, a man and a woman approached her and the man struck her in the face with his fist.

After the victim fell to the ground, the man grabbed her purse and the two fled the scene on foot, the victim told deputies.

The victim, who is assisted by a walker, was able to get herself into the store to seek assistance from the staff. She was transported by Rockingham County EMS for further treatment of her injuries.

Deputies began a search of the area and were able to track the suspects to a location on Wentworth Street.

Christopher Michael Caudle, 43, and Kristie Shelton Chilton, 39, both of 116 Trailer Drive, Ruffin, were arrested and charged with common law robbery.

Caudle is being held under a $25,000 secured bond and Chilton is being held under a $20,000 secured bond. Both are confined in the Rockingham County Detention Facility and are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 7, 2016.
