CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Chatham County man is in custody, accused of abusing and killing a child, according to Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Erik Lindley.

Jeffery Scott Ferguson Jr., 24, of Moncure, is charged with one count of murder and non-negligent manslaughter and one count of felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

On Dec. 5 at about 7 a.m., the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by UNC Hospital about a potential case of child abuse that occurred around the 100 block of Haywood Road in Moncure.

The juvenile died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident, Lindley said.

Lindley said during the course of the initial investigation, Ferguson was developed as a suspect. After consulting with the District Attorney’s office, warrants were taken out on Ferguson.

On Friday, Ferguson was arrested and taken into custody. He was jailed with no bond allowed and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4, 2016.

“The loss of a child is always a tragedy. The fact that the loss occurred during the holiday season makes it even more difficult to bear. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office would like to remember all the family and community members impacted during this troubled time and let them know our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release on Monday.
