CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. – A North Carolina news station has posted to social media what appears to be a photo of a whale off the North Carolina coast.
“The Scarola family of #ilm sent us this pic of a whale off #CarolinaBeach today. What a great shot!” tweeted WWAY in Wilmington on Saturday evening.
Whale sightings off the North Carolina coast are not unusual, according to the Wilmington Star News.
“We know that on any given day from basically November through March and April, we could have right and humpback whales off our coast,” Ann Pabst, a marine biologist at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, told the paper in 2012. “We do not have a sense of how many are offshore right now, but we do know that this is an important time when whales are moving through our waters.”
Humpback and right whales spend the summers in cooler, northern-hemisphere waters and migrate closer to North Carolina during the winter, according to the paper.
It remains uncertain what kind of whale is pictured in the photo or specifically where the image was taken at Carolina Beach.
