GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Filing a claim with your insurance company or paying a ticket after a car accident can be a headache.

Statistics released by AAA shows 14 percent of crashes that result in an insurance claim occur in parking lots.

Over the past two years, there have been about 2,200 parking lot accidents in Greensboro and about 650 in Winston-Salem.

But AAA experts are offering drivers a way to possibly prevent parking lot accidents-- their recommendation is to back-up into parking spots. That way when drivers pull forward to leave, they'll have a better view of what's going on around them and potentially avoid accidents.

Statistics show 76 percent of Americans drive forward into a parking space, rather than backing up. AAA experts say this becomes a potential danger for drivers when it’s time to reverse out that spot, because of oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

In the midst of holiday season shopping, AAA experts are encouraging drivers to practice backing up into spots.
