GREENSBORO, N.C. — Rhonda Woods was in the back room of her house on East Bragg Street at about 11 p.m. Wednesday night when she heard a series of gunshots followed by someone banging on her back door. Before she could react, her front doorbell was ringing.

A woman she didn’t know told Woods that two people had been shot. “She was hollering, screaming and crying,” Woods, 59, said. “She said her cousin had been shot. She told me to call the police.”

Jeffrey Devine Hampton, 44, and Ernest Lemark Cuthbertson, 23, were shot in the 1000 block of East Bragg Street at about 11 p.m., police said. The men were in a car when they were shot, Greensboro Capt. Mike Richey said Thursday.

Cuthbertson was dead when police arrived. Hampton was taken to Moses Cone Hospital, where he later died.
