BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Caswell County woman has been charged with patient neglect and abuse.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit, after an in-depth investigation, arrested 51-year-old Donna Jefferson Lewis of Elon and charged her with five counts of abuse and neglect.

Authorities received a complaint regarding the abuse of a patient at D&M Family Care Home on Burch Bridge Road in Burlington in January of 2015 from the Alamance County Department of Social Services. Authorities said Lewis was the owner of the facility, which is now closed.

A search warrant was executed at that care facility which included the seizure of records, medical devices, prescription medications, and cell phones.  The investigation was presented to the Grand Jury which indicted the suspect on all counts.

It is alleged that Jefferson caused patients to remain in her facility that were in need of specialized care, that she refused patients use of their medical devices, and that she allowed patients to be improperly medicated at her facility.

She is in jail under a $125,000 secured bond.
