HURON, Calif. – An alleged burglar has died after he got stuck in a home’s chimney and the homeowner started a fire.

KTXL reported that it happened Saturday in Fresno County, Calif., as the homeowner returned home to start a fire.

The suspect allegedly crawled into the chimney overnight to rob the house. After starting the fire, the homeowner said he heard screams from inside the chimney.

Fire crews were called and the chimney was dismantled. But the alleged burglar was dead by the time responders pulled him out.

An autopsy Sunday was expected to determine the man’s identity and official cause of death, according to KSWB.

A fire official told KERO that most chimneys are not completely open due to a metal plate toward the bottom that blocks access.
