CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers will replace a fan’s Green Bay Packers banner after it was torn down by quarterback Cam Newton on Sunday, WJZY reports.

Mike Dobs, who lives in Fayetteville but was born and raised in Wisconsin, said he got permission from Bank of America Stadium officials to bring his $500 banner that said “North Carolina Cheesehead” to Sunday’s game.

Opposing team signs are typically not allowed at Bank of America Stadium during Panthers games.

Dobs said when Newton came toward him, he thought the quarterback was going to autograph the banner, not tear it down.

Newton defended tearing down the banner, saying bringing a Packers sign to the Panthers’ stadium is like selling a Whopper at McDonald’s.

According to WJZY’s report, a representative with the Panthers called the Dobs family and said they will recreate the banner and give it to the family. The original banner was destroyed.
